Charles R. Thompson, Upstate SC Artist

The other side of creativity

So it’s been awhile since I posted anything… well anything other than utter nonsense on Facebook. In artistic terms I’ve been rather stagnant lately. Being creative is something I am extremely grateful for, but there are limits. I’ve encountered that all-too-familiar-to-fellow-artists phenomenon known as complete and total catharsis.

A week or so ago I stayed up late watching Awakenings (probably for the 15th time in my life)  and it recently dawned on me that (at least in my case) creativity isn’t much unlike the struggles of the characters of the film. They sit there… minds intact… but cannot seem to budge. Of course after much deliberation, poking and prodding, there is an answer to get them moving again. Not so easy in this case.

Lately the struggle has been one of too many crossroads and not enough housecleaning. It’s not uncommon to have quite a few different creative ideas a day. Lately it’s just been a matter of a dozen or more a day… the kind that ’stick’ and eventually pile up only to clutter the works.  Start one… the others fall behind. Choose the wrong one and frustration ensues. Are the big ideas too much to take on?  The simple answer usually wins…

do nothing and nobody gets hurt.

Try anything.

Meditation, working out, pull weeds, fold the clothes… nothing but little distractions keeping the little gremlins at bay.

Getting the inside out and keeping the outside out

wall

One of the things I’ve recently come back to is the good ol’ blue board. When I was younger and had limited resources (not that this has changed much) I picked up this from a friend of mine with whom I played music. We were both very goal oriented and always looking for ways to push ourselves further in our efforts. The blue board is just what it sounds like… a big piece of blue posterboard. The idea is to pin or tape up all the things you want, goals, hopes, dreams, etc. then systematically condition yourself towards those things. Why blue? No idea… that’s just want I was told to do.

Every day you look at the board before you do anything else. You take the time to stare each piece of this big puzzle down and question each item. How do they line up? What’s the most important? Do I need this? How am I going to manage that? Is this the right thing or can it be replaced with something else? You move pieces around.. put the things that are important in an area that feels important, take the things that eventually feel stupid and unnecessary off and toss em. You do this every day. Put the stuff you don’t need and keep it in a stack. Feel free to add things back.. new stuff. Whatever. Just keep moving with it.

Done? Ok.. forget about the board and everything on it. Go live life. Your brain will handle the rest. What you are doing (and it took me a few years to get it) is taking the mish-mosh of signals your brain needs to sustain focus on all this ’stuff’ and externalizing it. You are telling your mind that you recognize all this stuff, but we’ll put it over here for safekeeping until it’s critical. It’s like storing it off on some external memory card. By not letting this bang around in your head you are allowing some time for all the stuff to slow bake and at the same time curbing the impulses to just go out and needlessly snag all these things you desire. It’s sort of a short circuit for your survival instinct. You no longer sit at work going “If X doesn’t mesh with Y I won’t afford Z then what will I do?” After enough time, all your mind knows is that you are working toward some goals so maybe you better spend less, or not buy that unnecessary thing you just picked up, or just focus on the task at hand. All of a sudden you feel like you don’t need certain things, but can’t really say why…it’s just a ‘hunch’

Eventually you reach a point where you realize (after alot of critical thinking every morning) that one of these things is right… and the timing is perfect for it. Ok.. go get it. Now take it off the board and put it in a different stack. Lather, rinse repeat. Long ago when I worked as a waiter I started this little habit and managed to build a small recording studio at an age when most people just blow through all their money with reckless peril.

So this all seems rather materialistic but there is another layer. After years of doing this I got to a point where the items on the board were things I could not buy, or fully quantify. I began to find that there was a shift from external needs to internal and my life started to gain focus and clarity. Most of the physical things were in fact, items I needed to acheive internal goals. This year marks the first time I’ve put the board up in about 4 years and within the first 30 days I’m happy to say I’ve dropped quite a few items in the ‘accomplished’ bucket and am excited for what else the year will bring.

So go make a blue board and start an adventure.

Cityscope Installation

While waiting for the behemoth install of CS4 to finish up this evening I came across a rather intriguing installation in Germany. It’s really beautiful… to many ideas to come to mind. Stained glass, the color of reflections in kid’s soap bubbles, etc.

I would surely like to see more adoption of pieces like this in the upstate.

Those of you who (unknown to me) were direct linking to my id=CRT**** art view pages from the old site probably got a surprise when everything stopped working last week. Oops. I made some modifications to the site today to support the old inventory numbers so your links will work and land visitors on the new view page.

It’s been a busy few months. Just popping in to show a few pieces in progress.

griffin

Griffin – around 4 foot by 4 foot. I thought this was done (as evidenced by the signature) but am thinking of a bit of tweaking to the top area based on feedback from some of my art friends.

Precipice – about 5 foot by 4 foot or so. Still in blocking and development stages. More shots below.

unt1

Currently Untitled – About 11 x 4 feet… this is a labor of love, only messed with when the mood suits me as it is simply ginourmous and too much to tackle at once.

I finally managed to get my Flickr updated and linked back into the primary site at www.charlesrthompson.com. Still working on the final display but it will work for now. I’ve also put up a section related to charity as I find myself stating the same thing time and again when asked in emails.

Calling all collectors…

Calling all collectors of my work. If you own a piece or two of my work and don’t mind… I’m looking to hear from you and possibly get a photo of where it hangs or even better, with you nearby!

Based on feedback from a few collectors of my work I’m working up a section of the site to show these, possibly the owner, and ask you to write an optional little blurb about the artwork. It can be as simple as ‘I likey’ or what the piece means to you.

Please send your shots/comments to charles@charlesrthompson.com
Thanks!

The new website is up!

After many moons (equivalent to months I guess) my new site is finally up and running and the response has been well received. A few gremlins exist (mainly in the zoomify closeups) and those will hopefully be corrected soon. As far as art goes, I’ve got some new pieces either complete or nearing completion that should be up over the next few days. Today has been all about getting the wordpress blog up and going so it can feed into the website. Lots of housework stuff to do but then I’m hoping to get back into the studio for the first time in about two weeks or so.

I’m excited as more stuff will emerge on the site over the year. I’ve got quite a lot going on behind the scenes with plenty of creative avenues but I’ve decided to scale back the launch only to what’s ready to show at the moment.
